Any view on counter attacking a full back entering the line against a man to man marking system?
Bring your FB in to track and cover him.
Are you looking at how to defend an oppo FB entering the line, or how to attack from our FB entering the line?
Thanks I am looking to defend against the opp FB entering the line fist, then if it is tured over how to best counter attack.
If you are man to man, I assume you are close(r) to your goal line. If you want a designed counter, as soon as you blind defense is set, I would bring the blind wing into the 10 channel and shift every back out one channel. This will leave your 15 (with 9 and 6 on their way) to sweep any chips, etc. At the turnover, the 9 and 15 are the half backs who can set up a quick midfield ruck using the remainder of the pack. Then another ball wide should leave you with either a mismatch of your recovered backs against their tight 5, or no wide coverage as their blind wing has had to slot into the FB spot as cover.
Without undermining Wes, I would suggest keeping it simple. When counter attacking ALWAYS feign to the opposing strength. The 1st receiver (not the 10) should always aim to angle his run at where the opposition forwards are to commit them to that area, then an acute switch to be run off him.
At any turnover ball, I always get the 9 to miss the 1st obvious receiver, the actual receiver then runs a line towards the oppo forwards and switches to either the 15 or a deep runner who runs an angle away from the opposing mass. Call it 'controlling the mass'.
Its exactly the same countering from a kick to our back 3. the receiver makes the initial run to the opposition pack, then switches with either the wing or the 15, who runs with support and immediately attacks opposition weakness, which is generally out wide.
like so
counter attack
CONTROL THE MASS
1st receiver feigns to oppo strength
counter attack from a kick from wide set piece
counter attack 2
wiggly line is kick to 15
Hope these help!!!
The important thing about both of these is that the support takes up position behind the (kick) receiver asap.
Just an add here. In a man for man it is difficult for the front 3 to defend against the 15 coming into the line, and the oppo 15 would most likely be tackled by our 15, so a counter would come from a breakdown with very little support.
Theres another question on here regarding the drift that may help.
Thank you both this has been really useful
